Strengthen your school's media relations

The Effective School Media Relations course aims to provide school staff with the practical skills they need to raise the profile of their school in the local and regional media.

We will help you understand your local and regional media, write a press release, identify good picture opportunities and build positive relationships with journalists.

You'll also learn how to prepare for a local radio interview and carry out a "real" recorded radio interview with an experienced broadcaster.

What you will learn:
1. Understanding the differences between local, regional and national newspapers. What commercial and public service radio and TV want from your school;
2. How local and regional news journalists see your school's story. Understanding newsroom pressures, newsworthiness and deadlines;
3. The five secrets behind a great press release; what are the characteristics of a great school press release; how to write an effective press release that will get noticed;
4. Why pictures help your story into print; the importance of news pictures; how to make your school's story more attractive with imaginative photographs;
5. How your school can plan news, photographs and interview opportunities around the school calendar;
6. Building relationships between your school and the local media; how to build a media mailing list for your school; keeping it warm and developing a mutually beneficial two-way relationship with news journalists;
7. Working with local radio; preparing for radio interviews; getting your points across.
Plus... 1-2-1 radio interview coaching and feedback from a real radio journalist..

You too can learn the skills and techniques for effective media relations!
