Introduction to Marketing and PR - Course to Charities and the Voluntary Sector
This practical course is aimed at people with limited knowledge of Marketing and PR and how best to publicise your organisation or group. It will explore ways of improving your marketing plan, covering everything from identifying your target audience, creating and maintaining a brand image and ways to get your organisations name in the media. The course combines practical stage by stage advice, backed by sound theory, to provide you with an interactive seminar.
Course leader Paul Sample has been training people in the charity sector for over 15 years. He has worked as Senior Press Officer at Help the Aged, Head of Public Relations for Crime Concern and Senior PR Officer for Leonard Cheshire Disability amongst others.
The course consists of 7 main elements:
USP. establishing a clear Unique Selling Point for your charity or voluntary organisation. What is unique about your organisation? Why should people involve themselves in your cause?
Market. understanding the market you are in and how to produce a simple plan to help you market your charity product. Whether this be a sponsored charity jump, a fundraising event or something more complex like an advice service, you will learn to target what your customers want and how to put the offer in front of them in the most effective way.
Brand Image. what makes a great charity brand image? Learn how to translate your vision and mission into a distinctive and united brand image.
Promotional Literature. what makes a great charity flyer or leaflet? This section goes into the importance of headlines, great photography, readable text and creative design.
Website. learn the key elements of a great charity website; understanding the needs of the visitor and getting the specification correct, even if it is simply one page.
Media. how do you get your charity or voluntary organisation into the eyes and ears of the local media? You will learn ways of getting good, positive coverage from local radio, newspapers, TV and blogs. Learn how to write a simple and effective press release for publication.
Newsletters. learn the key elements for charity newsletter design, techniques to ensure it ends up under a magnet of the fridge rather than in the recycling bin.
Course leader, Paul Sample, says: “We won't turn you into a marketing guru, but we will cover the basics so that you will be able to plan a targeted marketing campaign to suit the specific needs of your organisation.”
